Cumberland Selects

Overview

The Selects Program is designed to provide enhanced development opportunities for players who demonstrate strong skill, commitment, and a desire to compete at a higher level.

 

The program serves as a bridge between house league and Rep Hockey, offering motivated players the opportunity to further develop their skills in a more competitive environment.

 

The program complements regular league play by bringing together the top players from the A divisions for U11, U13, and U15. Players will participate in additional practices, skill development sessions, and exhibition or tournament competition against other Selects programs.

 

The Selects program emphasizes:

  • Skill development and hockey IQ
  • Teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership
  • Competitive game experience
  • A positive, challenging environment that supports long-term player development

 

It is an excellent opportunity for motivated athletes to challenge themselves, represent the Association, and continue their growth both on and off the ice.

Selects program timeline

  • September 15 – October 1: Online applications for the Selects Program are open.
  • October 1 – October 15: Coach interviews are conducted, and coaches are selected.
  • October 15 – October 31: Player evaluations take place.
  • By November 15: Selects teams are finalized and announced.

Evaluations

Player evaluations for the Selects Program will begin once the Dukes selection process has been completed. Throughout the evaluation period, experienced coaches and evaluators will attend A division games to assess players in a game environment. Participation in the Selects program is intended to recognize player achievement while providing an opportunity to further develop individual and team performance.

 

Players will be evaluated using a consistent set of criteria, including:
  • Skating ability
  • Puck control and technical skills
  • Hockey IQ and decision-making
  • Competitiveness and work ethic
  • Overall impact on the game
  • Attitude, discipline, coachability, and sportsmanship
While hockey skills are a key component of the evaluation process, character and attitude are equally important. When players demonstrate similar skill levels; attitude, coachability, and sportsmanship will play a significant role in the final selection. Players chosen for the program are expected to represent the Cumberland Selects, their teammates, and the association with pride, respect, and integrity whenever they wear the Selects jersey.

Selects Rosters

Each Selects team will consist of a roster of 17 players, including 9 forwards, 6 defencemen, and 2 goaltenders.

 

In addition to the rostered players, each team may identify up to 2 alternate players. Alternate players will be encouraged to participate in Selects practices and development sessions whenever possible. They will also be eligible to be called up for games and tournaments when rostered players are unavailable due to injury, illness, or other absences.

 

The alternate player system provides additional development opportunities while ensuring teams can maintain a full and competitive roster throughout the season.

Selects jerseys

Each player will be provided with both a home and away Selects jersey for the season and are required to purchase Grads away socks at Houle Sports in Orléans. Prior to receiving their jerseys, both players and parents/guardians must sign a Selects Jersey Sign-Out Agreement.

Team Fees

The program fee is $275 for U11 and U13, and $350 for U15 for the season. This fee covers participation in tournaments, Selects practices, and player development sessions.
Teams can also participate in fundraising initiatives and secure sponsorships to offset costs and provide additional ice time and development opportunities throughout the season.

Development Opportunities

We are excited to announce that we will be working with our Development team to offer extra sessions for the Selects teams.  These sessions will be focused on improving our players’ skills through age-appropriate instruction tailored to the team's needs.  You can find more details about their program on the CMHA Development page.
