Welcome to the Cumberland Jr. Grads Competitive Tryouts.

Whether this is your first experience with competitive hockey or you have participated for many years, our goal is to provide a tryout process that is fair, transparent, respectful, and easy to understand.

This guide explains how players are evaluated, why certain procedures are used, and what players and families can expect throughout the tryout process.

Our Commitment

The Cumberland Jr. Grads are committed to delivering a fair, consistent, and professional tryout process across all competitive divisions.

We recognize that player evaluation is not an exact science. Players develop at different rates and bring different strengths to the game. No player is selected or released based on a single drill, practice, or game.

Players are evaluated over multiple sessions by experienced coaches and independent evaluators using standardized criteria. Our goal is to provide every player with a fair opportunity to demonstrate their abilities while treating every family with professionalism, integrity, and respect.

Every player will be evaluated using the same standardized criteria appropriate for their age division.

Key Takeaways

U9–U11

  • 3 non-evaluated conditioning sessions (as per Pathways)
  • One player/goalie evaluated skills session
  • Minimum of one evaluated intrasquad game + up to 4 exhibition games
  • Initial player releases can begin following the intrasquad game(s)

U12–U18

  • 3 non-evaluated conditioning sessions (as per Pathways – not applicable to U16/U18)
  • One evaluated goalie skills session
  • Minimum of two evaluated intrasquad games + up to 4 exhibition games
  • Player releases can begin after the two intrasquad games.

U10–U16

  • Once the roster has been reduced to approximately 20 skaters and 3–4 goaltenders, players will participate in one evaluated team-style practice.
  • No player releases will occur following this practice. The purpose is to evaluate players in a true team environment, focusing on systems play, attention to detail, coachability, communication, and overall habits before final roster decisions are made.

Tryout Philosophy

Our philosophy is to evaluate the complete player. Hockey is a dynamic game, and players often demonstrate different strengths in different environments. By evaluating players over multiple sessions, we gain a more complete and balanced assessment while reducing the impact of any one performance.

Roles and Responsibilities

Head Coaches evaluate players throughout the tryout process and make final roster decisions in collaboration with the Competitive Committee.

Independent Evaluators provide objective assessments at designated evaluation and release points.

Division Convenors manage player communications through TeamGenius.

Cumberland Jr. Grads Operations Team oversees the process to ensure evaluations and player releases are conducted fairly, consistently, and respectfully.

Why We Use Independent Evaluators

Independent evaluators provide an objective perspective throughout the tryout process. They attend the U9–U18 evaluated skills sessions, as well as all evaluated intrasquad and exhibition games.

Their observations complement those of the coaching staff, helping reduce individual bias and strengthen the overall evaluation process.

While independent evaluators play an important role, the Head Coach is responsible for making the final roster decisions, in collaboration with the Competitive Committee.

Player Release Communication

Player releases occur only at designated points during the tryout process.

Intrasquad Releases: Communicated by the Division Convenor through TeamGenius. Players released during this stage are not eligible for developmental feedback.

Exhibition Game Releases: Communicated by the Division Convenor through TeamGenius.

Final Releases: The final five players released will be contacted personally by the Head Coach by telephone before the TeamGenius notification is sent.

The final five players and final goalie released will be provided with constructive feedback and guidance to support their continued development.

Developmental Feedback

Developmental feedback is intended to support future player growth and is available only to the final players released during the exhibition-game portion of tryouts.

These players have been evaluated over multiple sessions and game situations, allowing for meaningful and constructive feedback.

Parents and Guardians

Parents play an important role in creating a positive tryout environment. Encourage effort, preparation and sportsmanship. Questions about the process should be directed to the Association after the conclusion of tryouts. There is a zero-tolerance policy for aggressive or abusive language directed towards any volunteer or participant.

Final Note

Thank you for participating in the Cumberland Jr. Grads Competitive Tryouts. We appreciate the commitment shown by every player, parent, volunteer, and coach. Our goal is to provide every participant with a fair, respectful, and positive experience while supporting the long-term development of our athletes and the continued success of Cumberland Minor Hockey.

Decorum during tryouts

Tryouts can be stressful. It is important to recognize that not all players will be selected. Though we strive to offer fair, transparent and ethical evaluations, some parents may disagree with decisions and/or outcomes. Please be mindful that this is organized sports for children, not professional hockey. We ask that parents, players and spectators remain polite and cordial with all participants and volunteers. There will be no tolerance for belligerent, impolite, aggressive or violent behavior.

Only designated supervising adults/parents will be allowed in the changerooms. Players are expected to carry their own hockey bags to the changeroom with the exception of U9 players and younger goalies.
